This mentorship culminated in the production of Samba’s debut album\, Fondo (The Way)\, a 100% traditional Songhoy album. \nSamba’s most recent album\, Baarakelaw (The Workers)\, blends traditional music\, blues-rock\, psychedelic elements\, ballads\, and love songs. The album explores the theme of small trades in Bamako\, paying tribute to water sellers\, tailors\, and housekeepers—crucial yet often overlooked contributors to social cohesion in Mali. It includes a heartfelt tribute to Samba’s late wife\, who passed away during his 2023 European tour. In Baarakelaw\, Samba Touré emerges again as an anti-griot\, singing not for illustrious ancestors or contemporary power figures but for the simple people who constitute his daily landscape. He dedicates these songs of homage\, dignity\, and respect\, infused with compassion and good-natured humour\, to those too often forgotten or despised. DESCRIPTION:Painting is a new Berlin-based band featuring former Soft Grid members Theresa Stroetges (Golden Diskó Ship) and Christian Hohenbild as well as saxophonist Sophia Trollmann. They play SynthPop/AvantKraut/NoiseJazz. \nDas Günther has been shaking up the alternative techno\, party\, and festival scene (Fusion\, Sisyphos Berlin\, Chaos Communication Congress\, and more) with their improvisation spectacle for 8 years. With the album Strawberry Gelato (March 8\, 2024)\, the band stretches its feelers toward post-punk and indie for the first time with classic songwriting\, without losing their roots in the political\, strange\, and danceable. \nGünther’s mother describes her child as follows: “Party! Party! Depressed! Depressed!” For some\, Günther requires therapy\, for others\, Günther is the therapy. Like a shabby clown\, Günther leads not only the audience but also themselves by the nose. Günther doesn’t write songs; they invent them on stage. Günther is punk\, clown\, and mother all at once. \nFans of Das Günther often describe the band from Hanover a bit differently: “You have to see Das Günther live\, otherwise\, you won’t get it”; “WTF\, what was that?”; or “Did they just change costumes 7 times while singing?”. After singing along to fragments like Mit Staub Geschwängert\, Im Darkroom Sind Wir Alle Geschwister\, or Allein Auf Ecstasy and dancing their bodies empty\, some lyrics will still find their personal meaning in the heads or dreams of concertgoers.

DESCRIPTION:There is spirit and fire in the music of The Zawose Queens. There’s the vibrations of the ancestors\, coming through on traditional instruments — soaring chizeze fiddle\, buzzing illimba thumb piano\, ngoma drums that chatter and thunder — and voices that go deep\, high and out there. There’s the connection to nature\, to ceremony and ritual\, in their dance-inspired fusion\, their blend of the organic\, harmonic and modern-day electronic. There are lyrics that tell\, in their native kigogo\, of the passion for music\, the wonders of life. Of pride in environment\, in tradition. In their East African roots. \nPendo and Leah Zawose showcase the fluid polyrhythms and rapturous polyphonic singing of the Gogo (aka Wagogo) people of the arid\, hilly Dodoma region of central Tanzania. \nThe most famous exponent of this musical tradition is the late\, great Dr Hukwe Zawose (Pendo’s father and Leah’s grandfather). \nMaisha\, the debut album by The Zawose Queens\, marks the first time that women from this famous musical family take their place as lead vocalists and performers. Emboldened by workshops in songwriting and music production with visiting UK-based producers Oli Barton-Wood (Jordan Rakei\, Obongjayar\, Nilufer Yanya) and Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist\, Onipa)\, The Zawose Queens began writing their first ever songs. The resulting collection of songs range from the stripped back and traditional-sounding to those treated with subtle electronic elements\, with beats and drops and found sounds and switch-ups.

DESCRIPTION:With their ever-mutating brand of jazz-and-country-laced punk\, Opus Kink have always cut a singular figure in a saturated landscape. Making their name with incendiary\, cult-like live shows\, the band – formed in Brighton (UK) in 2017 – have developed a sound as elusive as it is recognisable. Underscored by a formidable horn section and ragged\, sardonic delivery\, the band bear passing resemblance to post-punk and no-wave acts like The Pop Group\, Birthday Party and Lounge Lizards\, but it’s the weaving of older\, more traditional influences – choral\, folk\, country\, Latin\, Weimar cabaret\, cruise-ship-crooning – into the fabric of their music that sets them apart. Through their songs concerning violence\, evil\, shame\, troubled sexual politics\, anxiety and emptiness\, all served with a wry absurdist bent\, Opus Kink craft an alluring nether-world for their voracious audiences to plunge into. \nThey tore through the UK and Europe in the early years of the group and formed a reputation for intoxicating\, otherworldly carnage – broken ribs\, bloody microphones\, shamanic ritual and even a ruptured spleen were part and parcel of their touring show – as well as a fierce loyalty to the DIY and grassroots venues and heroes they encountered. While the narrative and spiritual world of Opus Kink underwent constant evolution\, the close relationships they fostered with underground music-world-denizens would inspire their philosophies and works along the way. Performances in Serbian abattoirs\, stadium complexes in Istanbul\, spur-of-the-moment DIY shows in Tyneside industrial estates and secret appearances crammed into the back of their local dive that quite literally brought the roof down – this adaptability and unconcern for career propriety carved out a place for Opus Kink in the hearts of rock’n’roll weirdos.

Blending Ottignon’s lyrical piano and Osmose synthesis with Kahle’s soulful vocals and organic\, ancestral rhythms\, the project\, refined by UK producer Seiji\, creates immersive music that sits at the intersection of spiritual jazz\, ambient experimentation\, and Afro-electronic sound. \nHey Remember This is a Genre-ambivalent\, semi-improvised\, nostalgia-resistant instrumental trio from Newcastle that seems to have come unstuck in time. \nAna-Louise Hammond (vibraphone) along with John Pope (electric bass) and Diji Solanke (drums)\, brings a set of new music that intersects somewhere between minimalism\, contemporary alt-folk\, and jazz. \nThis band can be characterised by a focus on texture and rhythm\, often exploring interlocking patterns or irregular time signatures. \nWhen we find ourselves assailed on all sides by demands to recollect The Old Days\, and to align our futures with imagined pasts\, Hey Remember This sets out a stall somewhere within the space of “What if we didn’t do that?”

Their thrilling live shows have lit up festivals such as Glastonbury\, Leeds Jazz Festival\, and Musicport\, and sold out venues including The Forge (London)\, Brudenell Social Club (Leeds)\, and Band on the Wall (Manchester).
