SUMMARY:Fresh Thursday // La Tène + ANTONÍ
DESCRIPTION:Fresh Thursday is a weekly event where we serve you new and unusual live music alongside home cooked meal. \nWe created Fresh to encourage listeners to take a chance on artists they haven’t heard before & discover something completely new. You can expect great new & unusual music alongside a communal home-cooked meal in a relaxed\, seated atmosphere with candles and board games. The programme spans a wide range of genres well suited to a chilled Thursday evening\, with plenty of time to chat before and after performances. Occasionally there might be a little dancing at the edges! Lots of people come on their own and make friends and there is a choice of individual seats and communal tables.  \n\n  \nLa Tène has found the common denominator between the most stubborn rock and ancient – even very ancient – music\, whether traditional or not\, and brings it to a boil through still yet mesmerising performances. Exploring the cracks between tradition and experimentation\, between hypnotic drone and repeated gestures\, but this time they choose to move onto new ground: the hurdy-gurdy\, the group’s emblematic instrument since the very beginning\, disappears in favor of a stripped-down setup centered on two electronic percussions and live dub work. This is not a mere stylistic twist: it is about transforming a constraint into a creative drive. Alexis Degrenier\, long associated with the telluric sound of the hurdy-gurdy\, can no longer play it. Yet he remains\, above all\, recognized as a percussionist and composer. With his companions\, he decided to inscribe this transition into the very heart of their new album: a way of thumbing their nose at fate\, of turning a great and beautiful page\, and of reminding us that La Tène has always fed on accidents\, detours\, and bifurcations. \nANTONÍ combines poetic folk songwritng with cinematic arrangements\, blending contemporary folk\, chamber pop\, jazz and subtle electronic textures. Touring the UK as a duo with Norwegian composer and pianist Einar Stray (Einar Stray Orchestra\, Mildfire)\, she presents an intimate live set for voice\, guitar\, piano and synthesizers. Together they reinterpret songs from her debut album Holding Tight Lightly in a stripped-back yet immersive performance full of warmth\, atmosphere and sonic detail. \n\n  \nThese evenings are all about culture\, community and making new music accessible. If you’re able to choose a Cobalt Supporter ticket\, your extra contribution genuinely helps us continue to deliver these events.

SUMMARY:Samba Touré + Support
DESCRIPTION:Samba Touré’s music is characterized by hypnotic guitar grooves radiating with the intensity of the desert sun. It transcends borders\, creating an authentic and groundbreaking sonic landscape—a journey of emotional depth and rhythmic brilliance where tradition meets innovation\, resonating with the spirit of Northern Mali. \nA renowned Malian guitar legend\, Samba Touré is celebrated for his distinctive style that not only mirrors but also elevates the enduring legacy of the legendary Ali Farka Touré\, with whom he toured worldwide. The genesis of their association dates back to the 90s\, when Ali Farka Touré discovered the young singer while he was playing with Farafina Lolo\, Samba’s initial group\, which gained immense popularity in Mali. \nImpressed by Samba’s talent\, Ali Farka Touré gifted him a guitar\, encouraging a shift towards more traditional music. This mentorship culminated in the production of Samba’s debut album\, Fondo (The Way)\, a 100% traditional Songhoy album. \nSamba’s most recent album\, Baarakelaw (The Workers)\, blends traditional music\, blues-rock\, psychedelic elements\, ballads\, and love songs. The album explores the theme of small trades in Bamako\, paying tribute to water sellers\, tailors\, and housekeepers—crucial yet often overlooked contributors to social cohesion in Mali. It includes a heartfelt tribute to Samba’s late wife\, who passed away during his 2023 European tour. In Baarakelaw\, Samba Touré emerges again as an anti-griot\, singing not for illustrious ancestors or contemporary power figures but for the simple people who constitute his daily landscape. He dedicates these songs of homage\, dignity\, and respect\, infused with compassion and good-natured humour\, to those too often forgotten or despised. While inspired by Malian society\, the album’s message holds universal significance.

Lots of people come on their own and make friends and there is a choice of individual seats and communal tables.  \n\n  \nClaire Vine is a folk singer and songwriter based in Machynlleth\, Wales. Her solo project fearlessly explores urgent themes of land rights\, oppression\, climate change and inequality\, in timeless songs that sound like they’ve always existed. Using subtle electronics to layer her voice into a haunting choir\, she creates a space for her listeners to collectively feel the grief expressed in her music\, offering a moment of shared catharsis. She is also a skilled song-interpreter\, delivering classics from the traditional/folk revival canon with a new and profound humanity. \nClaire Vine released her debut solo album We Carve Our Path on 13 March 2026 on Bristol-based community label Cuculi Records\, who also released her debut EP Tunnel in 2020. With a thread of unequivocal political urgency running throughout\, this evocative collection features five original songs and five highly inventive interpretations of songs drawn from the traditional canon and the repertoire of folk legends Peggy Seeger and Ewan MacColl. She has also recently been granted the DYCP grant from Arts Council England\, supporting her to develop her singing and songwriting craft alongside working on a series of collaborative song-writing workshops relating to climate justice and climate grief. \nClaire is a member of long-running psychfolk band Hands of the Heron\, contributing songs and arrangements to albums 13 Moons and Quiet Light\, and touring extensively at venues and festivals across the UK. She also collaborated with dronefolk project Woodfolk for their EP Oak\, and performs with respected vocal/percussion ensemble Tryani Collective. \nLuzy Huzzard – With one foot on the dancefloor at all times\, Lucy Huzzard brings a love of groove and dance music to her solo set\, interwoven with her songwriting of the personal and political. On melodeon and foot percussion\, her set promises to be a joyful\, soulful and groove-driven call to move your feet\, and lift your heart. \n\n  \nThese evenings are all about culture\, community and making new music accessible. SUMMARY:Fresh Thursday // Deradoorian + Silver Ley
\n\n  \nDeradoorian – Fusing elements of indie rock\, avant-garde electronic music\, dub\, and dance rhythms\, Deradoorian is the name Angel Deradoorian works under as a solo artist. She launched said solo career after making a name for herself as a member of Dirty Projectors and collaborating with artists such as Avey Tare and Flying Lotus. Her albums\, including 2015’s ‘The Expanding Flower Planet’ and 2020’s ‘Find the Sun’\, are cosmic song cycles informed by her spiritual journey. After collaborating with Kate NV under the name Decisive Pink on 2023’s heavily electronic ‘Ticket to Fame’\, Deradoorian added that sound to her already jam-packed approach on 2025’s ‘Ready for Heaven’. \n“Deradoorian’s voice is the main attraction. Wispy one moment\, bellowing full-throated the next\, and capable of dazzling melismatic runs\, it remains her not-so-secret weapon.” – Pitchfork \nEngaging with past musical glories helps deal with a major theme of this album; the awful nature of the world around us. Deradoorian: “This album is partly about watching humanity erode. It’s about mental struggle\, and it’s avowedly anti-capitalist. I mean; would we have all these identity labels we have to live by\, if we didn’t live in a capitalist world?” \nSilver Ley (fka. Bethany Ley) is a Bristol-based producer\, composer\, harpist and vocalist known for crafting intricate and ethereal arrangements that blend their classical background with electronic music. Originally trained in piano\, viola\, and voice\, Ley’s influences span classical\, folk\, and contemporary electronic music. \nTheir 2024 debut EP ‘Sundial’ released on Lo Recordings\, earned acclaim for its inventive blend of electronica and distinct ethereal vocals\, leading to a sold-out UK tour and gaining support from Gilles Peterson’s future bubblers programme and PRS Women Make Music. Ley has further supported Kae Tempest and Baths\, worked alongside collaborators Ishmael Ensemble\, Batu\, and Alabaster DePlume and has performed across major UK venues and international stages across Europe. \n\n  \nThese evenings are all about culture\, community and making new music accessible. SUMMARY:Suntou Susso & The Gambian Superstars + Cocrico Collective
DESCRIPTION:Suntou Susso — a virtuoso kora player\, singer-songwriter and composer from The Gambia living in the UK — was born into the Griot tradition. Fresh from releasing his multi award-winning second album\, Jaliya Silokang – The Path of a Griot\, Suntou and his band are bringing his exciting new music to you. Suntou’s compositions are rooted in the Afro-Manding and Griot musical tradition with influences from folk\, funk\, jazz and soul. He is joined by a powerhouse lineup of musicians\, performing together in the UK for the very first time. Collectively\, they’ll be bringing the mindblowing musicianship and authentic sunshine energy of the Smiling Coast of Africa. \nGriots play an important cultural role as peacekeepers\, advisors and oral historians\, transmitting teachings and preserving a people’s culture using song\, music and poetry. Whilst this is an ancient role\, Suntou’s latest album explores this role in a contemporary\, global context. Drawing on his own experiences as well as the wisdom of elders and youth alike\, the album is a journey into heritage and a hopeful vision for what lies ahead. In this way\, Suntou is a guardian of the Griot musical and cultural tradition and a bold innovator of its future. \nThe Future is Ancestral.

SUMMARY:Painting + Das Günther
DESCRIPTION:Painting is a new Berlin-based band featuring former Soft Grid members Theresa Stroetges (Golden Diskó Ship) and Christian Hohenbild as well as saxophonist Sophia Trollmann. They play SynthPop/AvantKraut/NoiseJazz. \nDas Günther has been shaking up the alternative techno\, party\, and festival scene (Fusion\, Sisyphos Berlin\, Chaos Communication Congress\, and more) with their improvisation spectacle for 8 years. With the album Strawberry Gelato (March 8\, 2024)\, the band stretches its feelers toward post-punk and indie for the first time with classic songwriting\, without losing their roots in the political\, strange\, and danceable. \nGünther’s mother describes her child as follows: “Party! Party! Depressed! Depressed!” For some\, Günther requires therapy\, for others\, Günther is the therapy. Like a shabby clown\, Günther leads not only the audience but also themselves by the nose. Günther doesn’t write songs; they invent them on stage. Günther is punk\, clown\, and mother all at once. \nFans of Das Günther often describe the band from Hanover a bit differently: “You have to see Das Günther live\, otherwise\, you won’t get it”; “WTF\, what was that?”; or “Did they just change costumes 7 times while singing?”. After singing along to fragments like Mit Staub Geschwängert\, Im Darkroom Sind Wir Alle Geschwister\, or Allein Auf Ecstasy and dancing their bodies empty\, some lyrics will still find their personal meaning in the heads or dreams of concertgoers.

SUMMARY:The Handover + frise lumière
DESCRIPTION:The Handover is as much a ritual as it is an ensemble. The trio\, consisting of Aly Eissa (oud\, Egypt)\, Ayman Asfour (violin\, Egypt)\, and Jonas Cambien (vintage organ/synth\, Belgium/Norway)\, is blessed with a near-telepathic musical sensitivity that renders each live performance a singular\, nuanced experience\, grooving deeply despite the absence of percussion. Inspired by the hypnotic\, trance-inducing music of Egypt’s Nile Delta\, fueled by kraut-like riffs and the intensity of ’60s avant-garde jazz\, and channelled through roguish improvisation\, The Handover’s sound is veritable psychedelia. It is at once futuristic and primordial\, yet\, with the utter urgency of its testament\, it demands lucidity. \n”defying the laws of physics and floating skywards” * * * * * – Songlines Magazine \n”ferocious and forceful” – the Wire \nfrise lumière is the sonic research and creation project of artist and composer Ludovic Gerst. \nAt the intersection of performing arts and avant-garde\, jazz\, minimalist and experimental music\, his work is built around a defining constraint: the exclusive use of the electric bass. Diverted from its traditional role\, the instrument becomes at once a sound source\, a resonant body\, and a tool for spatialization — a self-contained sonic system capable of generating rhythmic patterns\, harmonic layers\, and percussive textures simultaneously. \n“An initiatory or even metaphysical journey…” JazzMania — Belgium

SUMMARY:Spafford Campbell + Watersmeet
DESCRIPTION:Spafford Campbell are twenty-something mould-breakers\, fiddle player Owen Spafford and guitarist Louis Campbell. \n\n\nThe two first met as teenagers playing traditional music. The connection\, they say\, was immediate. The duo Spafford Campbell began playing live in 2018\, prompting double takes with their delicacy\, dynamism and seemingly telepathic exchanges\, with the startling intimacy of musical conversations nurtured in improv-led writing sessions. \nTheir latest album Tomorrow Held is a visionary body of eight largely instrumental tracks that hold space\, resolve into mystery\, that fold in elements of jazz\, post-rock and chamber classical music while raiding the folk music toolbox. Call it what you want: post-folk. Trad-noir. Folk nihilism. Then know that Spafford Campbell are blazing a trail that erases genre — and finds gold in the embers. \nWhile redolent of Talk Talk’s moody\, experimental 1988 opus Spirit of Eden\, and riven with a Bon Iver-ish sense of transcendence\, Tomorrow Held is a work of bold singularity. A whole greater than the sum of its parts — parts that include effects pedals\, ambient cassette loops\, flashes of electric guitar\, electronic processing on fiddle and impressionistic accompaniment. \n“Mingling traditional tunes with influences from minimalism\, post-rock and jazz\, they shift moods exquisitely” The Guardian — 10 best folk albums of 2025 \n“England’s finest and most innovative instrumental duo.” ★★★★★ Songlines — Top of the World \nWatersmeet is Anna Hughes and Jessie Howard. Partners in life and in music\, they came together in 2022\, to share slow-burning\, heartfelt songs with lofty melodies. Interweaving guitar arrangements meet spacious harmonium drones creating a dreamlike yet grounded sound carried by close-knit harmonies. Their music explores ideas of rest and restlessness\, nature and wildness\, guiding listeners into a space of reflection and reverie. \n“Their style is where light meets dark\, gripping\, thoughtful and packed with poignancy.” – Shakk (BBC Introducing North East)

SUMMARY:The Zawose Queens + Support
DESCRIPTION:There is spirit and fire in the music of The Zawose Queens. There’s the vibrations of the ancestors\, coming through on traditional instruments — soaring chizeze fiddle\, buzzing illimba thumb piano\, ngoma drums that chatter and thunder — and voices that go deep\, high and out there. There’s the connection to nature\, to ceremony and ritual\, in their dance-inspired fusion\, their blend of the organic\, harmonic and modern-day electronic. There are lyrics that tell\, in their native kigogo\, of the passion for music\, the wonders of life. Of pride in environment\, in tradition. In their East African roots. \nPendo and Leah Zawose showcase the fluid polyrhythms and rapturous polyphonic singing of the Gogo (aka Wagogo) people of the arid\, hilly Dodoma region of central Tanzania. \nThe most famous exponent of this musical tradition is the late\, great Dr Hukwe Zawose (Pendo’s father and Leah’s grandfather). \nMaisha\, the debut album by The Zawose Queens\, marks the first time that women from this famous musical family take their place as lead vocalists and performers. Emboldened by workshops in songwriting and music production with visiting UK-based producers Oli Barton-Wood (Jordan Rakei\, Obongjayar\, Nilufer Yanya) and Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist\, Onipa)\, The Zawose Queens began writing their first ever songs. The resulting collection of songs range from the stripped back and traditional-sounding to those treated with subtle electronic elements\, with beats and drops and found sounds and switch-ups.

SUMMARY:Opus Kink + Support
DESCRIPTION:With their ever-mutating brand of jazz-and-country-laced punk\, Opus Kink have always cut a singular figure in a saturated landscape. Making their name with incendiary\, cult-like live shows\, the band – formed in Brighton (UK) in 2017 – have developed a sound as elusive as it is recognisable. Underscored by a formidable horn section and ragged\, sardonic delivery\, the band bear passing resemblance to post-punk and no-wave acts like The Pop Group\, Birthday Party and Lounge Lizards\, but it’s the weaving of older\, more traditional influences – choral\, folk\, country\, Latin\, Weimar cabaret\, cruise-ship-crooning – into the fabric of their music that sets them apart. Through their songs concerning violence\, evil\, shame\, troubled sexual politics\, anxiety and emptiness\, all served with a wry absurdist bent\, Opus Kink craft an alluring nether-world for their voracious audiences to plunge into. \nThey tore through the UK and Europe in the early years of the group and formed a reputation for intoxicating\, otherworldly carnage – broken ribs\, bloody microphones\, shamanic ritual and even a ruptured spleen were part and parcel of their touring show – as well as a fierce loyalty to the DIY and grassroots venues and heroes they encountered. While the narrative and spiritual world of Opus Kink underwent constant evolution\, the close relationships they fostered with underground music-world-denizens would inspire their philosophies and works along the way. Performances in Serbian abattoirs\, stadium complexes in Istanbul\, spur-of-the-moment DIY shows in Tyneside industrial estates and secret appearances crammed into the back of their local dive that quite literally brought the roof down – this adaptability and unconcern for career propriety carved out a place for Opus Kink in the hearts of rock’n’roll weirdos.

SUMMARY:Fresh Thursday // Elf Traps + Shunya
\n\n  \nElf Traps is the new project from Manchester-based musicians Rob Turner (ex–GoGo Penguin) and Liviu Gheorghe (ex–Matthew Halsall) — a collaboration born from creative restlessness and deep friendship. \nAfter years inside the traditional frameworks of the music world\, both felt the need to follow instinct over expectation. So they stepped back — from their bands\, from the noise — and started again. With no plan and no genre in mind\, they began experimenting. What started as two friends jamming in a room evolved into something deeper: a hybrid system rooted in improvisation\, where acoustic drums\, analogue synths\, and laptops interact in real time. A space to explore sound without rules — vivid\, messy\, and completely their own. At first\, they weren’t thinking about audiences. But gradually\, they began sharing it — with friends\, in basements\, at warehouse parties and DIY spaces around Manchester. The response was real. Fellow travellers began to gather — drawn to the raw spirit at the project’s core. 808 State legend Graham Massey and instrument innovator Piotr Raczyński (Polyend) were among the first to catch on\, sharing their wisdom and encouraging the duo to stay true to their instincts. \nTheir sound blends spiritual jazz\, glitchy electronics\, jungle\, ambient\, and beyond —weaving influences from Squarepusher\, Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid\, Buddhism\, StarTrek\, and the vivid\, organic forms of artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Turner’s iconic\, glitch-inflected drumming merges with Gheorghe’s textural\, expansive synths to create a fresh\, immersive sonic landscape. Two musicians. One conversation. Infinite possibility \nShunya (Alan Keary) is a multi-instrumentalist and producer\, with a strong musical heritage\, writing and producing music from the age of fourteen. Performing under the alias Shunya\, his sound is a contortion of influences\, stemming from his background in classical violin and jazz bass\, and growing with the sounds of Manchester’s electronic music scene. \n\n  \nThese evenings are all about culture\, community and making new music accessible. If you’re able to choose a Cobalt Supporter ticket\, your extra contribution genuinely helps us continue to deliver these events.

SUMMARY:AROMA + Hey Remember This
DESCRIPTION:Drawing from spiritual jazz\, ambient pop\, Afroelectronic beats\, and world fusion\, AROMA creates immersive soundscapes that echo both ancestral rhythms and contemporary textures. If Floating Points\, Alice Coltrane\, and Fatoumata Diawara jammed in a sunlit Paris loft… it might sound like this. \nAROMA is the transcontinental electronic project of acclaimed pianist Aron Ottignon (Blue Note\, Stromae\, Baaba Maal) and sound alchemist Nane Kahle (Sonic Interventions). Blending Ottignon’s lyrical piano and Osmose synthesis with Kahle’s soulful vocals and organic\, ancestral rhythms\, the project\, refined by UK producer Seiji\, creates immersive music that sits at the intersection of spiritual jazz\, ambient experimentation\, and Afro-electronic sound. \nHey Remember This is a Genre-ambivalent\, semi-improvised\, nostalgia-resistant instrumental trio from Newcastle that seems to have come unstuck in time. \nAna-Louise Hammond (vibraphone) along with John Pope (electric bass) and Diji Solanke (drums)\, brings a set of new music that intersects somewhere between minimalism\, contemporary alt-folk\, and jazz. \nThis band can be characterised by a focus on texture and rhythm\, often exploring interlocking patterns or irregular time signatures. \nWhen we find ourselves assailed on all sides by demands to recollect The Old Days\, and to align our futures with imagined pasts\, Hey Remember This sets out a stall somewhere within the space of “What if we didn’t do that?”

SUMMARY:Fresh Thursday // Salt House + Maja Bugge & Dave Evans
DESCRIPTION:Fresh Thursday is a weekly event where we serve you new and unusual live music alongside home cooked meal. \nWe created Fresh to encourage listeners to take a chance on artists they haven’t heard before & discover something completely new. You can expect great new & unusual music alongside a communal home-cooked meal in a relaxed\, seated atmosphere with candles and board games. Occasionally there might be a little dancing at the edges! Lots of people come on their own and make friends and there is a choice of individual seats and communal tables.  \n\n  \nSalt House have been a mainstay on the folk scene for over a decade. The band’s reputation as thoughtful and innovative interpreters of both ancient ballads and contemporary songs has been solidified with acclaimed album releases\, airplay and extensive touring. Described as a “gentle\, lulling delight” by The Guardian\, Salt House blend heartfelt vocal and instrumental interplay\, offering listeners a moment of reflection and connection. \nNew songs that sound like they’ve always been here\, ancient ballads woken up. Poems given melodies they’ve long deserved. \nSalt House’s sound is influenced by the landscapes of the Scottish Highlands\, Northumberland and Shetland\, the respective homes of band members Ewan MacPherson (vocals\, electric and acoustic guitars)\, Anna Hughes (vocals\, fiddle\, viola\, tenor guitar) and Jenny Sturgeon (vocals\, keys\, guitar). They incorporate their natural surroundings into the fabric of the music that speaks of a shared love of place\, people\, and evolving tradition. \nMaja Bugge & Dave Evans – Acclaimed cellist Maja Bugge (NO/UK) and award-winning pianist Dave Evans (UK) are touring new work grown from a collaboration which began in 2023 with the work SORTLAND. This was a musical exploration of memory and place that was commissioned by and first presented at Sortland Jazz festival that year. Taking inspiration from narratives around movement\, nature\, heritage\, location and belonging\, the work uses melody\, language\, and grooves and experiments with space\, stillness and repetition. At times joyful and playful\, and at others quiet and vulnerable\, this music is not afraid to go to the strangest or quietest of places. \n\n  \nThese evenings are all about culture\, community and making new music accessible. SUMMARY:Fresh Thursday // Arjuna Oakes + Ellen Beth Abdi
\n\n “Soulful\, sophisticated music that feels both timeless and completely contemporary” – Rolling Stone Australia \nArjuna Oakes is a New Zealand-born\, London-based artist whose genre-fluid sound draws on soul\, jazz\, alternative rock\, folk\, electronic music\, and contemporary classical. Backed by a formidable live band\, his songs take on a different life on stage\, emotionally charged\, sonically expansive\, and built around exceptional musicianship. \nArjuna has built a reputation as one of the most exciting acts currently emerging from London’s underground scene\, selling out Ronnie Scott’s\, performing at the Royal Albert Hall in the Elgar Room\, Manchester Jazz Festival\, London Jazz Festival\, and packing out Brick Lane Jazz Festival in 2026. He has opened for Bilal\, Jordan Rakei\, Moonchild\, and Allen Stone\, while earning tastemaker support from Gilles Peterson\, Jamie Cullum\, China Moses\, Harvey Sutherland\, Jazz FM\, BBC Radio 6\, KEXP\, and Spotify Fresh Finds. \nEllen Beth Abdi uses live loops\, pokey drums\, undulating synths and quietly subversive lyrics to mould her unique sound. ‘Wonky soul-infused pop with a social conscience’. \nEllen’s enchanting and distinctive voice has gained her spots at Maida Vale\, Radio 4’s Loose Ends\, 6 Music Festival\, We Out Here\, Manchester O2 Apollo and support slots for Olivia Dean\, Hollie Cooke\, Ishmael Ensemble\, Oscar Jerome and Allysha Joy. She was invited to collaborate live with music legend Angélique Kidjo\, opening Aviva Studios for Manchester International Festival 2023 and was selected for Jazz North’s Northern Line programme in 2025. \n‘One of Manchester’s finest’ – Craig Charles \n\nThese evenings are all about culture\, community and making new music accessible. If you’re able to choose a Cobalt Supporter ticket\, your extra contribution genuinely helps us continue to deliver these events.
